Title: Tightening the Knot
Fandom: Final Fantasy XIII
Pairing: Cid/Rygdea
Rating: PG
Notes: Musebox-verse. Written while listening to "You're the Inspiration" on repeat. Go me. Unbeta'd. Written for Dagger, because I adore her and her Ryg more than words can ever say.

All he could think about was finding the perfect way to express himself. Cid knew exactly what it was that he intended on doing, even if it had been a long and arduous journey getting there. For most men, it was a simple enough thing: have a lover, realize that they loved them, decide that they want to spend the rest of their life with them, and go on from there. For the Brigadier General, unfortunately, things were hardly that easy. Namely, the facts that his lover was his military subordinate, and the fact that the "rest of his life" could be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Perhaps shorter, perhaps longer; he was at the whim of a fal'Cie and a tattoo upon his hand.

And yet, despite the fact that he knew that even getting into this relationship was nothing but incredible selfishness, as Rygdea had no idea that he was ultimately betraying him, the Cavalry, and their ideals... Cid could not help it. He couldn't help the fact that Rygdea brought him the sort of happiness that he hadn't felt for longer than he could remember, that he was the one thing that made him feel as if he had some humanity left in him, that he gave him a reason to smile, and all the rest of the sappy clichés. It was all but hilarious to him how it felt so much like a damned cliché, the type of thing one would read in a sappy romance novel. Rygdea made him that happy.

Happy enough that Cid now found himself in a jewelry shop, browsing through the rings as surreptitiously as he could without arousing suspicion.

Whether the whole thing was going to be purely symbolic or not, he didn't yet know. Would he and Rygdea even have the time or opportunity to wed? Did he want to leave the man a widower rather than short a lover? Would either of them be living long enough for any of that to matter, if Barthandelus' plan succeeded? Right now, though, Cid wanted to shove the fal'Cie's name as far as he could away from his head. Right now, it was just Rygdea and himself that mattered. After seeing how happy merely the mention of a possible marriage made the brunet, he wanted to make him smile while he still could, even if he was ultimately going to crush that same smile.

Lighter thoughts, Cid chastised himself as he scanned through the glass cabinets of jewelry. Better to think lighter when doing something such as this. He had since shooed off the employees asking him if he wanted help, wanting to keep his true intentions secret. Though the stares he nonetheless got told him that he was being recognized for more than just his height, hopefully he could get away with this just being a very fancy purchase for himself. No need to start unnecessary rumors.

Buying an engagement ring for a man was, unfortunately, much more difficult than buying one for a woman. Cid needed to find something that wasn't plain but not overly fancy, somewhat masculine but not something just any man would normally wear on a day to day basis. Something special in all the right ways. It was almost half an hour of scanning carefully through the available rings that he was about to give up and leave for another shop, when something finally caught his eye.

The ring wasn't a traditional one in the way that it focused on diamonds. Instead, a sapphire served as the centerpiece, accentuated by several small diamonds around its border. The band itself was white gold, a strip of yellow gold running through the middle of it. All and all, coupled with the quality and karats of the gems and metal, it was something that would break the bank of most men.

While not anything overly romantic like the exact shade of Rygdea's eyes, he knew that blue was the man's favorite color. A focus on the sapphire made the ring look much less suspicious as an engagement ring, but the diamonds made it stand apart from just any other ring. As for the price, Cid barely spent any money on himself, and coupled with his sizable salary, he hardly minded spending a few paychecks on something this special and important.

He purchased the ring as quickly as he could, not wanting to spend any more time under scrutiny than necessary. Having measured Rygdea's ring finger while the man was sleeping (he wondered sometimes if a missile hitting the Lindblum would even wake the man up), it wasn't difficult for him to have converted it in advance to an actual ring size and lie about his own after waving off the employee about to check his own ring size.

Fifteen minutes and half a million gil later, the Brigadier General left the jewelry shop with his purchase securely in his uniform pocket. Picking out the perfect ring was a short ordeal, but he knew that it was the easy part. The hard part would be the proposal. Even if he was fairly certain Rygdea would say yes, he wanted to make it as perfect as possible. The man deserved nothing less.

"Inescapable, provocative bastard," he muttered to himself as he began his walk back to the Lindblum, but a smile was nonetheless accompanying the harsh words.
